Nathan's Secret
"So, what about you? What's your secret?"
Nathan hesitated before answering Haley's question. He knew the answer. He knew that there was one thing that had been eating at him over the past few weeks. It was something he'd never told anyone. Something he never thought he'd tell anyone. Until now.
"I'm..." he took a deep breath. "I'm jealous."
Haley furrowed her brow, confused. "Jealous? Of who?"
Nathan paused, looking into Haley's soft brown eyes before he gave the quiet answer. "Of Lucas."

Haley opened her mouth and then closed it again. He was jealous of Lucas? Nathan Scott, all-star basketball player, and son of one of the richest families in Tree Hill was jealous of a guy who he claimed to hate? It just didn't make sense. She shook her head in confusion. "You're jealous of Lucas? But you--"
"It doesn't make sense, I know. It's just... it's hard for me to admit this, Haley, but..." Nathan looked down at his hands before going on. "I want what he has. His mom is always around, he doesn't have to live with my dad, and most importantly... he has you. He has your friendship and trust. I guess... I guess I just wish you were as at ease with me as you are with him."
Haley listened as he poured out his heart; when he was finished, she reached across the table and took one of his fidgety hands.
At her touch, he looked up at her and smiled shyly.
She smiled back. "Look, Nathan, it's just... it's complicated. The whole situation with you and Lucas. Sometimes I feel like I'm stuck in the middle. Just give me some time to sort things out. Okay?"
"Sure, I can do that."

After dinner, Nathan walked Haley home, still holding her hand. They reached the front door and he turned to face her, with his heart racing and butterflies in his stomach. He looked down at her, nervously contemplating what to say. "I had a really nice time tonight," he started. "I'm glad you decided to come."
"Me too," she answered with a confirming nod. They looked at each other in an awkward silence for a moment, neither of them wanting to say goodbye. Haley broke the silence first, motioning toward the door. "Well, I guess I should go inside now."
"Yeah, I guess you should," Nathan said reluctantly.
Haley reached for the door with one hand, still holding Nathan's with the other.
"Wait," Nathan said suddenly, pulling her back toward him. He leaned down and placed a soft kiss squarely on her lips. He rose slowly, opening his eyes to look at her again. Her eyes fluttered open and locked onto his.
After a moment, she smiled. "Goodnight, Nathan."
"Goodnight, Haley."
